About the material
Calcium stearate is the calcium salt of stearic acid, CAS 1592-23-0, a metallic soap melting at roughly 147–149°C. Long fatty chains attached to a calcium centre make it waxy and water-repellent, and cause it to migrate to surfaces and interfaces where it lowers friction.
In PVC it does two jobs at once. As a lubricant it reduces friction between polymer chains in the melt, improving flow through dies and moulds and giving smoother surfaces and more consistent dimensions. As an acid scavenger it neutralises the hydrogen chloride that PVC releases as it degrades at processing temperature, which is what prevents the discolouration and loss of mechanical properties that HCl otherwise causes.
