About the material

RSS is graded differently from block rubber. Where SMR and its equivalents are measured against laboratory limits, ribbed smoked sheet is graded visually, against the norms set out in the International Standards of Quality and Packing for Natural Rubber Grades, universally called the Green Book.

Grading is done by holding sheets against the light, where bubbles, mould, specks and other defects become apparent. RSS 1 is the cleanest of the commercial grades and is specified where tensile strength, tear and abrasion resistance matter; the numbers rise as the permitted level of visual defect rises.

Because the assessment is visual rather than instrumental, origin and packer reputation carry real weight in RSS trading, which is why bale weights and container loadings differ by producing country.
