About the material
NBR is a random copolymer of butadiene and acrylonitrile, typically containing 25% to 40% acrylonitrile. That single ratio governs most of its behaviour.
Raising the acrylonitrile content increases molecular polarity and cohesive energy density, which improves resistance to non-polar oils and reduces static build-up. The trade-off is flexibility: the more nitrile in the polymer, the better the oil resistance and the stiffer the material, with cold resistance suffering at the top of the range.
For gloves the relevant chemistry is usually carboxylated NBR (XNBR), made by emulsion polymerisation of butadiene, acrylonitrile and methacrylic acid. It combines good tensile strength with the oil resistance that makes nitrile the default where natural rubber latex protein allergy is a concern.
