About the material
Titanium dioxide is the standard white pigment because of one physical property: an exceptionally high refractive index. Particles of the right size scatter visible light efficiently, and that scattering is what produces opacity, or hiding power, in a paint or a plastic.
Hiding power is not a property of the chemical alone. It depends on particle size, on the difference in refractive index between the pigment and the medium around it, and on how close the particles sit to one another, which is why over-loading TiO₂ gives diminishing returns as particles begin to crowd.
Two crystal forms are produced commercially. Rutile is the more technically important and durable; anatase has higher whiteness and brightness, which matters in some uses. The manufacturing route decides what is available: the sulphate process can make both, while the chloride process produces rutile only.
