About the material
TMTD is a thiuram-class accelerator, the same family as TMTM, TETD, TBTD and DPTT. It is classed as an ultra-accelerator, meaning it acts fast and at relatively low temperature, which is why it is dosed carefully and often used alongside a slower primary accelerator.
The mechanism is well characterised. Homolytic cleavage of the sulfur–sulfur bond requires an enthalpy of about 150 kJ/mol, a low enough barrier that the accelerator activates readily. TMTD then reacts with zinc ions and with the surface of solid zinc oxide particles to produce highly reactive complexes, and these are what initiate crosslinking in natural and synthetic rubber.
TMTD also appears in our Rubber Additives range, where accelerators and antioxidants are listed together.
Typical applications
- Accelerator in natural and synthetic rubber compounding
- Tyre and technical rubber goods manufacture
- Sulfur-donor systems in low-sulfur cures
