About the material
The K-value in the table below is an index of molecular weight and degree of polymerisation, derived from solution viscosity. It matters more than its narrow numeric range suggests: polymer viscosity scales roughly with molecular weight to the power of 3.4, so a few points of K translate into a large difference in how the resin processes.
As a rule of thumb, resins below K 60 process most easily but have the poorest mechanical properties, and suit injection moulding, blow moulding and clear calendered film. The K 60–70 band is the most widely used and balances mechanical performance against processability. Above K 70 the mechanical properties are best, but the resin is harder to process and needs more plasticiser to reach the same flexibility.
Suspension PVC, the most widely used type, is made by dispersing monomer droplets in water and polymerising them. The resulting slurry is centrifuged and the cake dried gently, because the resin is unstabilised at that stage and degrades under heat.
