About the material
Both grades are stearic acid; what separates them is refinement. Triple pressed material goes through additional pressing that removes more impurities, giving the consistent acid value and colour that soap and detergent compounding depends on. Rubber grade is less refined and carries a higher iodine value.
In rubber, stearic acid is not a filler but an activator. Sulfur vulcanisation needs both zinc oxide and a fatty acid present to raise the rate and efficiency of crosslinking, and the stearic acid acts as a dispersing aid for the zinc oxide. That is why rubber grade remains standard in tyre and hose compounding despite being the less pure of the two.
Typical applications
- Tyre and hose compounding, as a vulcanisation activator
- Soap and detergent manufacture
- Coatings, lubricants and greases
- Plastics processing and textile auxiliaries
