About the material

SMR, SIR, STR and SVR are the Malaysian, Indonesian, Thai and Vietnamese national schemes for the same thing: technically specified block rubber. Rather than being judged by eye, the rubber is graded against measured limits — dirt, ash, nitrogen and volatile matter content, plus plasticity retention index.

The number in the grade is the dirt specification, and it is the figure that usually decides the application. SMR 20, the standard tyre-industry grade, permits up to 0.20% dirt by weight, while the cleaner grades sit an order of magnitude below that. Higher dirt tolerance is not a defect: it reflects the raw material used, and for most tyre and technical goods compounding it is entirely appropriate at a lower price.

Typical applications

  • Tyre and tyre component manufacture
  • Technical and moulded rubber goods
  • Conveyor belting and hoses
  • Footwear and adhesives
