About the material
Daylight fluorescent pigments are not dyes in the usual sense. They are made by dissolving fluorescent dyes into a brittle, transparent carrier resin at roughly 1–10% by weight, then grinding the coloured resin into a powder that behaves as a particulate pigment. Dyes based on Rhodamine B are among the most important.
The carrier resin determines much of the performance. Cross-linked polyesters are common, and one of the oldest carrier systems is a fully condensed para-toluene sulfonamide–melamine–formaldehyde resin. Heat resistance from these systems is what makes the pigments suitable for colouring plastics and enamels rather than inks alone.
Lightfastness deserves attention at specification stage. These colorants are formulated with additives to scavenge reactive environmental agents and to shield the surface from light-activated decomposition, because the fluorescent effect degrades faster than conventional pigmentation under sustained exposure.
