About the material

Accelerators and antioxidants do opposite jobs. An accelerator speeds up vulcanisation; an antioxidant protects the finished rubber from degrading afterwards. Both are specified together because a compound needs each.

Within the accelerators, chemical family determines cure behaviour. MBT and MBTS are thiazoles — general-purpose workhorses, often used as a base and boosted with a faster secondary accelerator. CBS is a sulfenamide, a delayed-action primary accelerator that stays quiet through mixing and shaping and then cures quickly once hot, which is what gives it good scorch safety and mechanical properties.

On the protection side, TMQ is used against oxidative and thermal ageing, while IPPD is a p-phenylenediamine that also works as an antiozonant, fighting the surface cracking caused by ozone attack.
